

Literacy Volunteers of Kent County(LVKC) is a nationally accredited adult literacy program. Founded in 1980, it has been serving the families of Kent County and its surrounding communities since that time
LVKC is sponsored by the Coventry Public Library and is a non-profit organization affiliated with ProLiteracy America, Inc. (PLA). PLA, a national organization headquartered in Syracuse, New York, was established in 2002 through a merger of Literacy Volunteers of America and Laubach Literacy International. These are two nationally known, long established literacy organizations with which LVKC is fortunate to be associated.

LVKC's focus is based on student literacy needs. Literacy Volunteers of Kent County emphasizes respect for the Student and confidentiality of the relationship between the Tutor and Student. Tutor training and Student recruitment are continuous throughout the year. LVKC has trained over 760 Tutors, and more than 1000 Students have been involved in the program since its inception. New people are welcomed to be a part of LVKC at anytime.
LVKC RECEIVES NATIONAL ACCREDITATION
Literacy Volunteers of Kent was recently awarded reaccredited status by ProLiteracy America, the US Programs Division of ProLiteracy Worldwide.
LVKC has served the Kent County area for 29 years, helping adults improve their reading, mathematics, listening, writing, speaking and technology skills.

They have demonstrated that their program meets the highest national standards for volunteer literacy programs and that their services to the community are effective. We applaud the many volunteers, staff and students who have devoted their time and effort to achieve this goal.”
ProLiteracy America’s Accreditation provides literacy programs with a comprehensive process for conducting an organization self-assessment, developing program improvement plans, and demonstrating that their organization meets the highest standards for governance, program management, program operations and volunteer development.
