The LVKC Board of Directors established the annual award for student excellence to honor the memory of Barbara Shafer, a longtime Board member and champion of student success who passed away in 2006. Recipients receive a plaque and a Barnes and Noble gift certificate. In addition, their names are inscribed on a permanent plaque, which hangs in the Coventry Public Library. LVKC solicits nominations for the Barbara Shafer Award from tutors and student advisors.
