Student Information

May I bring a friend to class?

Yes! Please tell your friends about us. New students must apply for enrollment with Literacy Volunteers of Kent County ( LVKC ) and have an evaluation first. New students must be 18 years old or older and want to work with a one-on-one tutor in the future.

May I stay in class once I am matched with my LVKC tutor?
Yes! Every student in Start Here! may choose to leave the program to work with a one-on-one tutor or remain in the program while meeting regularly with a one-on-one tutor. Students may not substitute group work for individual work when a tutor is available.

What will we do in class?
Students join small groups for language instruction, including listening, speaking, reading and writing. Groups come together for activities including language games, conversation, and everyday English practice.

How can I become a tutor volunteer?
Prospective tutors are always welcome to attend regularly scheduled orientation/training sessions between program cycles. Tutor training by Literacy Volunteers of Kent County ( LVKC ) is ideal but not required. The Start Here! program leader provides lesson plans and materials for each class. Staff meets with tutors 1/2 hour before every class to discuss plans, offer suggestions and answer any questions.
